To the Editor:I write this as I mark Israeli Independence Day in the changed landscape of my neighborhood. Up the block: those of three more fallen soldiers. The park next to the grocery store: dedicated to the memory of another fallen soldier. Around the corner: the home of a young man murdered at the Tribe of Nova music festival on Oct. 7. Past the park: the home of Noa Marciano, a soldier and hostage who was murdered in Al-Shifa Hospital.

Shares of Novavax jumped as much as 50% on Monday as Wall Street cheered the company's new multibillion-dollar deal with French drugmaker Sanofi that sparked a dramatic turnaround for the struggling vaccine maker. Novavax's stock almost doubled on Friday after it announced the licensing agreement with Sanofi. Under the agreement, Sanofi will take a less than 5% stake in Novavax. Sanofi, one of the world's largest vaccine makers, will co-market Novavax's Covid vaccine in most countries starting in 2025. The deal also allows Sanofi to use Novavax's Covid shot and flagship vaccine technology, Matrix-M adjuvant, to develop new vaccine products.

Some 4,000 revelers gathered on the night of Oct. 6 at a field in southern Israel, mere miles from the Gaza border, for the Tribe of Nova music festival. At dawn, thousands of Hamas-led terrorists stormed Israel’s defenses under the cover of a rocket barrage. About 1,200 people were killed that day, the deadliest in Israeli history according to the Israeli authorities, including 360 at the rave alone. Many of the ravers were under the influence of mind-altering substances like LSD, MDMA and ketamine as they witnessed the carnage or fled for their lives.

Novavax generated fourth-quarter sales of $291.3 million, down from the $357.4 million in the year-earlier period. Novavax expects full-year 2024 revenue to come in between $800 million and $1 billion. Novavax anticipates first-quarter revenue to come in at $100 million, which reflects the tail end of the current Covid vaccination season. The cuts will help Novavax focus on further developing its combination vaccine targeting Covid and the flu, which it plans to launch in 2026. On Thursday, Novavax said it will settle a bitter arbitration dispute with Gavi, a nongovernmental global vaccine organization, over a canceled Covid vaccine purchase agreement.

Wall Street returned to its winning ways this week — and Nvidia 's blowout earnings report Wednesday night was a big reason why. The two other reports of note are the January new home sales report on Monday and ISM Manufacturing report on Friday.

A health worker prepares a dose of the Novavax vaccine as the Dutch Health Service Organization starts with the Novavax vaccination program on March 21, 2022 in The Hague, Netherlands. Novavax on Thursday said it will settle a bitter arbitration dispute with Gavi, a nongovernmental global vaccine organization, over a canceled Covid vaccine purchase agreement. In 2022, Novavax terminated a purchase agreement with Geneva-based Gavi. Under the settlement, Novavax has paid an initial $75 million to Gavi and will make deferred payments of $80 million each year through Dec. 31. Analysts had previously told CNBC that Novavax could "be in trouble" if the arbitration forced it to pay the full $700 million to Gavi in 2023.

Family members of three hostages say that Israel should not agree to a deal with Hamas before the Israeli military has achieved its objectives in the war. That puts them at odds with the Hostages and Missing Persons Families Forum, the main alliance of hostages’ families, which has forcefully urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to give priority to the captives’ release. His comments are a reflection of the emotionally charged debate in Israel around the fate of the hostages as the war in Gaza enters its fifth month. At least 30 of the roughly 136 remaining hostages captured Oct. 7 are believed to be dead, according to an Israeli intelligence assessment. As hostages’ families mount more aggressive protests to demand that Israel secure their release, a rift has deepened among Israelis about the cost the country is willing to absorb to have the remaining captives brought home.

BUDAPEST (Reuters) - Hungarian opposition parties have demanded the resignation of the president over her decision to pardon a man convicted as an accomplice in helping cover up a case in a children's home whose director sexually abused children. She added that the reasoning behind her decision was not public and all pardons were divisive by their nature. The former director was sentenced to eight years in prison for sexually abusing several under-age boys in 2004-2016. "I am baffled by Katalin Novak's decision as a human being and as a mother," Momentum chair Anna Donath said in a statement on Wednesday, adding she believed the decision was "morally incomprehensible". Some of the opposition and civilians called a protest in front of Novak's presidential office for Friday.

Vas Narasimhan, chief executive officer of Novartis AG, listens during a panel session on the opening day of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019. Vas Narasimhan, CEO of pharmaceutical firm Novartis, told CNBC Tuesday that he didn't believe there had been much improvement in preparedness for pandemics in the wake of the Covid crisis. "I'm sad to say, I don't think we've improved unfortunately," said Narasimhan, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He explained that there did not appear to be the continued level of investment as hoped for, during this "inter-pandemic" period. "Now that we're past the pandemic — and really because of the feats of our industry, companies coming up with incredible mRNA vaccines and diagnostic tools — we're back to almost no investment from governments," Narasimhan said.

LARNACA, Cyprus (AP) — Tomer Bassis expected his day to be filled with electronic trance music at the Oct. 7 desert rave party he was attending in southern Israel. The open-air Tribe of Nova music festival is believed to be the worst civilian massacre in Israeli history, with at least 364 dead. In a single day, Hamas and other Palestinian militants killed about 1,200 people in Israel, mostly civilians, and took around 240 people captive. The trips to Cyprus are supported by NovaHelp, a group of mental heath professionals who came together to help survivors of the rave party, said Raskin. Raskin has initiated another, similar project currently underway to bring parents who lost children during the Oct. 7 attack to undergo similar therapy in Cyprus.

A sign for The Bank of Nova Scotia, operating as Scotiabank, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada December 13, 2021. The lender said earnings in the 2024 fiscal year to Oct. 31 would be impacted by "slowing economic growth across its markets and increasing regulatory capital requirements" but it would also benefit from interest-earning assets. "We expect a challenging environment will persist for consumers and businesses," Chief Risk Officer Phil Thomas told analysts, citing muted Canadian economic growth, continued inflationary pressures and uncertain prospects for rate cuts. Finance chief Raj Viswanathan said deposit and loan growth were also expected to moderate from 2023 levels, noting savings levels have started coming down in Canada with inflation at multi-year highs, leaving consumers with less cash in hand. Its efforts to streamline operations resulted in a restructuring charge of C$258 million, Scotiabank said.

LONGER LEAD TIMESLarge-scale battery projects to store energy on grids and to smooth out the variance of wind and solar power are also seeing longer lead times. They are taking around 12 to 18 months to complete, around six months longer than they would take without the supply issues, said Andrew Waranch, chief executive of battery energy storage system developer Spearmint Energy. Utility AES Corp (AES.N) has stockpiled supplies of the equipment it needs to build battery storage projects through 2025, a company spokesperson said. A shortage of raw materials that has contributed to transformer supply delays is unlikely to ease soon, manufacturers said. The supply-demand dislocation has worsened with the rapid scale-up of wind, solar and storage projects.

There is no official list of who was in the bunker near Re’im, one of hundreds of shelters that dot the roads of southern Israel. The Relentless Longevity of Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic isn’t going anywhere. A full two decades after turning professional as a skinny teenager in 2003, Djokovic is just one match victory away from finishing a record eighth season as world No. By all normal expectations, the 36-year-old Djokovic should be showing signs of wear by now. Or have a whole generation of players bidding to tear him down. But as he joked this season: “It ain’t happening.”

With the economy slowing and adding fewer jobs, banks are anticipating more consumers could default on credit-card payments and mortgages, hurting profits. "(Canadian banks) are running a little bit tighter in capital than they have in the past," said Adrienne Young, director of corporate credit research at Franklin Templeton Canada. "I don't see them having to go out and raise equity... I think the banks will use other tools in their toolbox before having to go and raise equity," said Maria Gabriella Khoury, analyst at credit-ratings agency Fitch. "They are doing that.. to make sure banks are holding more capital as we potentially head into a downturn," Colangelo said.
